The Single Permit allows eligible non-EU nationals to live and work legally in Malta for a specific employer. Here is what you need to know before starting the process.
The Malta Single Permit combines residence and employment authorisation for third-country nationals who intend to work in Malta for more than six months. It is linked to the specific employer and employment activity approved in the application. A permit holder cannot simply work for another employer or perform unrelated paid work without the appropriate authorisation. An application may be made when the worker is still abroad outside the Schengen Area or when legally staying in Malta or another Schengen state, subject to the applicable conditions. In most cases, the Maltese employer submits the Single Permit application through the online portal; the worker then receives a link to confirm the information before final submission. First-time applicants should also check the Pre-Departure Course requirements introduced in 2026. Never start work simply because an application has been submitted: the appropriate permit or authorisation to work must first be in place.
